
Susan W. Downs, 69, of Griswold, passed away on January 6, 2025, after a courageous battle with illness. Born in Westerly, Rhode Island, on May 13, 1955, she was the daughter of the late Harry Wolfe and Gladys (Burke) Wolfe.
Susan spent over 40 years behind the wheel of a school bus, beginning her career in 1976. Though she often joked, saying, “I hate kids,” she did so with a smile, and her love for the children she transported was undeniable.
She was a devoted wife to her husband of nearly 50 years, Charles Downs, whom she married on January 17, and a loving mother to their daughter, Elizabeth Downs of Ledyard. Susan was the proud grandmother of Emmalin, 11, and Reagan, 9, whom she loved more than anything.
During her husband's Navy career, Susan traveled across the country, including a memorable trip to San Francisco, and the couple shared many cherished moments together. Susan's favorite car was their Eagle SX-4, which she fondly remembered.
A graduate of Ledyard High School, Susan was predeceased by her parents. She is survived by her husband Charles, daughter Elizabeth, and siblings: George (Peggy) Wolfe, Diannah (Joe) Cerasole, Sally (Randy) Eubanks, and Karl (Rose) Wolfe. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.
Susan had a strong love for NASCAR and enjoyed watching home improvement shows, passions she shared with those closest to her. She will be remembered for her humor, dedication to her family, and deep love for her granddaughters.
Susan will be missed deeply by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
