Updated: Jan 10, 2019

Stanley N. Megos passed away at the age of 90 at Windham Hospital on Saturday January 5th, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Groton to Mabel (Dart) and Stanley N. Megos, he had lived in Connecticut all of his life and retired in Eastford.

Stanley owned numerous businesses over the course of his life and worked for the State of Connecticut for years as a senior carpenter. Upon retirement, Stan’s passion for gardening prompted him to open up “The Variegated Foliage Nursery” and begin his dream job. His nursery was a go-to destination for many of his customers who enjoyed the gardens he created and his vast knowledge of rare and unusual plants. Over the past 20 years, he was a guest speaker at the New York Botanical Gardens, Pine Manor College and Cornell University as well as many garden clubs and flower shows. Articles about Stan and his passion for his nursery were published in Better Homes and Garden, Horticultural Magazine and CT Magazine. He also was a past president of the Greater Hartford Bonsai Society. Stan actively ran the nursery until October of 2018.

Stanley is survived by his children, Richard Megos, Debra and James Quinn, Marlene Lovanio, Christine Megos, Diane and Terry Ryan, and Lisa and Rick Williams, his brother Zane Megos and many grandchildren and great grand children.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 13th at 11:30 a.m. at Stan's Nursery, 245 Westford Road, Eastford, CT for family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the New York Botanical Garden in his honor.
