Sunrise : December 1, 1948 ~ Sunset: March 14, 2025

Peggy Louise Raines, a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family after a long illness. Born on December 1, 1948, in Philadelphia, she was the youngest daughter of ten children, second to the last child of her mother, Hattie Watkins. Peggy attended grade/middle school in Eustis, Florida, and graduated from Franklin K. Lane High School in Brooklyn, New York.
After getting married, she moved to South Carolina with her husband in her twenties, where she was employed by the Georgetown Steel Mill. Peggy was introduced to the Lord Jesus Christ through a revival led by Evangelist Strong. Peggy relocated to Connecticut in 1984, joining Faith Temple Revival Center and later becoming a member of Bible Gospel Center in 1989. She loved her church and church family.
Peggy’s kindness, generosity, and wit touched the lives of all who met her. Even during her illness, Peggy shared her faith with others, leaving a lasting impact. Her unique expressions could bring laughter or tears, and she was deeply loved. Peggy also had a sweet tooth and would often ask those close to her for something sweet to eat. She also loved watching the Christian channels and gospel music. Peggy was a very beautiful lady with long flowing hair.
She is survived by her cherished daughters, Tanya Gilliard-Johnson and Kidra Woods (Nakia Woods); her two grandsons, Nathaniel Christopher Raines (Uduak Raines) and Joshua Johnson; and her great-grandsons, Nathaniel Raines Jr., Karios Raines, and Christopher Raines. Peggy is also remembered by her two brothers, Gilbert Watkins and David Watkins; her three sisters, Willie Mae Taylor, Greta Watkins, and Azaline Brown.
Peggy was preceded in death by her father, Nathaniel Raines; her mother, Hattie Watkins; her brothers, Phil Watkins and Albert Watkins; her sisters Ginger Watkins, and Bertha Monroe. She also leaves behind a whole host of nephews, nieces, godchildren, and friends who will forever treasure her memory.
A Memorial Ceremony service will be held on April 5, 2025 11am at the church she attended (before the illness prevented) and loved Bible Gospel Center 143 Leeder Hill Hamden CT.Peggy’s legacy of love, strength, and compassion will continue to inspire all who
knew her.
