Evelyn Elizabeth (Thomas) Cullen, beloved wife, mother, sister, and grandmother, of Glastonbury, Connecticut, passed away on July 20, 2023 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Evelyn was born on February 27, 1929 in Gastonia, North Carolina to Joe Thomas and Mollie (Chronister) Thomas. Evelyn grew up in North Carolina and later raised her family in central Connecticut. Evelyn enjoyed gardening, watching hummingbirds at their feeder at her kitchen window, and cooking meals with and for her family. Evelyn loved reading, long walks with her husband around Lake Hayward, and traveling with her husband in their RV. Evelyn had a particular fondness for Southern Maine, spending a great deal of time in her and her husband’s cottage in Wells, Maine. Evelyn most enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a doting grandmother to her granddaughters, and she enjoyed hosting sleepovers when they were younger and treating them to lunch when they were adults. In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Robert Leo Cullen; her loving son, Robert Allen Cullen; her sisters, Wilma, Polly, and Helen; and her niece, Patricia Carpenter. She is survived by her granddaughters, Jessica Cullen and Amy (Cullen) Grendzinski; her great grandchildren, Owen and Oliver Grendzinski; her nephew, Dean Carpenter; her step-granddaughter, Elizabeth (Johnson) Funk; and her son’s widow, Mildred. Evelyn will be greatly missed by her family, but they will all carry her warmth, sense of humor, and sweetness with them wherever they go. The family would like to give a special thanks to staff and caregivers at Buckingham Heights Memory Care in Glastonbury, Connecticut who lovingly cared for Evelyn in her final years and who Evelyn saw as family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org.
